There are now studies that show burning scented candles is doing us more harm than good. Researches have found that most scented candles emit as many harmful toxins as diesel fumes and cigarettes. Scientists at Copenhagen University found that exposure to the fumes of burning scented candles cause even worst damage to the body than the same amount of diesel exhaust fumes. This toxic candle smoke caused lung inflammation and toxicity, as well as arteriosclerosis and cancer.

You’re Breathing In Lead

Where you aware that nearly 40 percent of all candles on the market contain lead wires inside of their wicks? These lead wires release five times the amount of lead considered dangerous for children and far exceeds EPA pollution standards for outdoor air (keep in mind we burn these things indoors). Exposure to high amounts of lead has been linked to ADD, ADHD, Allergies, Asthma, Hormone disruption, mental illness, and more.

Candles Are Derived From A Petroleum Byproduct

Most candles on the market contain paraffin, a petroleum byproduct. In other words, it’s an industrial waste. This chemical releases carcinogenic soot into the air when heated. This soot is very harmful to the lungs cause numerous respiratory issues.

Additional Bad Stuff Found In Candles

Here’s a list of other chemicals found in candles that are harmful to your health.

  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Cresol: Causes Allergies
  • Chlorobenzene
  • Phenol: One of the most dangerous ingredients
  • Styrene: Known to cause cancer
  • Acetone: Toxic to the lungs
  • 2-Butanone: Considered human respiratory toxicant
  • Toluene: Produces Diesel Like Fumes
  • Xylene
  • Benzene: Causes Damage to the Reproductive System

Sadly there are no regulations or standards when it comes to the candle manufacturing process. That’s why it’s important to look for candles with all-natural ingredients or even better make your own!

Here is a video featuring just one of the hundreds of all-natural candle recipes you can make right at home.
