Practical Self-Reliance

Reducing Your Dependency on Others by John D. McCann

What does self-reliance mean to you? The typical definition means doing things all on your own, using your own resources and requiring a little help from others.  I think it’s that and more.

Book Review: Practical Self-Reliance | PreparednessMama

Self-reliance is a mindset. A way to look at the things you’ve purchased or been given and make something new from it. To make it last beyond its useful life. That is what John McCann brings to us in his new book Practical Self-Reliance. He is the master of teaching us that self-reliance is something you can attempt (and achieve) anywhere. You don’t even need exceptional skills, only a willingness to learn.

I think John should have called his book The Encyclopedia of Self-Reliance because he’s taken every aspect of self-reliance and addressed it in this book. Some things are not covered in great depth, but we are always given enough information – and additional resources – so we know where to go to learn more. He certainly opened my eyes to the possibilities.

Here Are Just a Few of the Things I Learned:

  • -How to use a brake bleeder to vacuum seal mason jars (page 63)
  • -How to make a rocket stove from bricks (page 90-91)
  • -Use 5-gallon buckets and make a gravity water filter system (page 174-181)
  • -Chapter 11 teaches about making candles and oil lamps (page 199)

Who Is This Book for?

If you are looking for ways to do things on your own and be more prepared, this book is for you. Chapters 2 through 5 cover every aspect of food storage and preservation. Chapters 6 through 9 are about recycling, repurposing and gaining skills. Chapters 10 through 15 cover water storage, lighting, alternative power, sanitation & hygiene, staying warm and transportation.

What ways can you be more self-reliant? According to John McCann, the possibilities are endless. This book is full of the things he does every day to save money and make the most of what he has. We can all learn a lesson from this book.

It’s too bad that your giveaway requires a person to Tweet. I don’t have an account there, nor do I plan to.

Mittens and socks are on my “to learn list” also. As are larger scale food dehydrating (I’m just learning) and want to make a solar dehydrator and a smoker. Soap is my next to learn project.
