Did you know that conventional seed crops usually get more applications of pesticides and fungicides than a crop that is being grow as vegetables for your table? There are a few reasons. Since the seed crops are produced over a longer season than the crop grow for harvest, there is an increased “need” for more pesticide applications. Also, the regulations that control the amount of pesticides that are allowed for seed crops are not as stringent as food crops, hence more is applied – just to be safe. source

The organic seed that is being developed these days is stronger and may be able to withstand the vigor’s of YOUR garden better than a conventions seed.

Use Heirloom Seed for self-reliance (and flavor!)

My number one reason is simple – heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, which means you can save your own seed to replant from year to year. Self-reliance for sure! Read the article 6 Advantages of Heirloom Seeds Compared to Hybrids at Mother Earth News.

The number two reason is about variety. I want to grow more “unusual” plants and flavorful food so I choose organic heirloom seeds. Did you know that the Food and Agricultural organization of the United Nations as estimated that: “research has identified that approximately 7,000 plants…have been used throughout the worlds history as food. Today however, only three plants (wheat, rice and corn) provide more that half of all the global plant derived energy…and 90% of the worlds energy now comes from only 30 crops.”
